GIREP Seminar
2003

As output of the reform of Polish Educational system a lot of new textbooks (e.g. about 40 for junior high school (so called gimnazjum))
appeared. Among them teachers must choose the best, suitable for theme and for their pupils. The one, chosen by teacher must be correct from the scientific point of view and also should be a help in overcoming with students their problems in understanding of physics.
In the project we have shown that
1/ a lot of textbooks contain serious mistakes from the physics point of view and that teachers are not able, not enough qualified` to noticed that. Teachers take textbooks as a source of sure knowledge.
2/ Many of teachers do not recognize their students difficulties, and they also forgot their difficulties from the time they were students.
As a result they have problems in a quick evaluation of didactical virtue of textbooks. Only after longer use of a textbook, or after brainstorming during workshops they evaluate well textbooks.
3/ Although the everyday language is appreciated in textbooks by teachers, the difficulties created by such a language (misconceptions, lack of precision) is overlooked by teachers.
